ABSTRACT The election of the Hawke Labor Government in 1983 made some shift in Australian foreign policy orientation. Although the Australia-US relations remained important to Australia, but the Hawke government saw that Australia’s future was in relationship it developed with the region. This led a priority focus on closer engagement with Asia within Australia foreign policy. This undergraduate thesis will examines how Australian foreign policy in Asia under Bob Hawke Government (1983-1991). But first, it will describe about Australia’s national interest in Asia. This undergraduate thesis than argues that at that time Australian foreign policy was made to advance his national interests.
