Pengaruh Pemerintah Populis Hugo Chavez Terhadap Posisi Serikat-serikat Buruh di Venezuela

The Main Objective of this research is to analyze the influences of the populist Hugo Chavez’s government toward Venezuelan labor unions’ political affiliation to the state. Labor unions are the biggest interest group in Venezuela so that they have significant role in supporting or opposing the ruling government. Confederation of Venezuelan Workers (CTV) is the main confederation that opposes Chavez government. CTV affiliates with Action Democratic Party (AD), Social Christian Party (COPEI) and Business Federation (FADECAMARAS). The two political parties were the former ruler of Venezuelan political life. The former powers still have many tendencies to take over Chavez presidential position through various actions. The most important action that the opposition groups had done against the Chavez government was the fail-two-days coup in April 2002. The populist policies attract the poor support to the government against oppositions. The poor is the biggest presentation of all Venezuelan economic classes. Most of Venezuelan labors, especially the blue collar, come from this class of society. Therefore, Chavez populist (and socialist) policies have successfully gained huge support from the workers. There were many CTV members who change their position and became Chavistas. The result of massive support from the workers to Chavez government was the establishment of new labor unions confederation: National Union of Workers (UNT). The Result of this research is that President Chavez’s influences through his government’s policies to the labor unions political positions are very significant. His influences result most of the unions support to the government. The strategies which are the government used to manage and maintain working class political support to the government are clearly corporatic. Especially the way government puts its people at important positions in UNT. UNT become the organization of patron-clientele practices.
