2016 | Tesis | Ilmu KomunikasiABSTRACT The raid on Lembaga Pemasyarakatan Cebongan (Cebongan Prison), Sleman, The Special Region of Yogyakarta by some members of Indonesian Army1 special forces, Kopassus, in March 23rd, 2013 shocked the society of Yogyakarta. Both local and national media reported the incident enthusiastically. Komisi Nasional Hak Asasi Manusia (Komnas HAM/The National Commission for Human Rights) stated that the assault was a violation of Human Rights. In contrary, some citizens of Yogyakarta supported it, making the reporting of the case more interesting. Approached by Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, this research uses two local newspapers in Yogyakarta—Kedaulatan Rakyat and Tribun Jogja. In order to complete the text analysis, interviews with the editors and actors in sociocultural practices are conducted. This research concludes that Kedaulatan Rakyat supported Kopassus and had different opinion from Komnas HAM. On the other hand, Tribun Jogja advocated Human Rights, although justifications for the conduct of the Kopassus personnels also simultaneously appeared on discourses produced by the newspaper.
