Abstract The Ecotourism area of Gunung Api Purba in Nglanggeran Village, Patuk District, Gunungkidul Regency is one of the examples of best practices that draw out attention. Because of the management has been done by the local community, developing of small and medium micro enterprises, preservation of the traditional cultural arts, and nurturing environmental sustainability demonstrates the spirit of the sustainable tourism development. This topic becomes interesting to be explored due to the absence of research on the implementation of sustainable tourism in this tourist village. This study aims to examine the implementation of sustainable tourism development, as well as the efforts done by Pokdarwis in order to maintain sustainable tourism in the Ecotourism area of Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran. This research used a qualitative method with the case study approach. The chosen informant in this research are those who truly competent in the respective fields regarding the topic of sustainable tourisms development. The data consists of primary and secondary data. The result of research revealed that tourism implementation in the Ecotourism area of Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran complied with the principles of sustainable tourism namely economic, social and environmental. The economic principle related to the empowerment of local communities and creating new economy business groups. Social principles related to the provision of job opportunities for the people, preservation and formation groups of cultural arts in each hamlet. Environmental principles relating to the movement of people together with tourists in preserve the environment is the key to sustainable tourism in the region. But on the other hand, the trash from tourists threaten the environment and tourism activities of the region. As for the effort to keep the implementation of the sustainable tourism that is making village regulations on the environment, the provision of credit capital businesses, protection of statues and the local culture of commercialization, and the equitable distribution of community involvement. Recommendations from the research is the protection statues, TPS3R operation, equitable community involvement, creation of village regulations on the environment, and manufacturing capacity assessment.
