ABSTRACT Small company perspective in mainstreaming practice of social responsibility in Indonesia is still unexplored. Therefore, this study examines the social responsibility from the perspective of Small Medium Industries in the Sentra Batik Tulis Giriloyo. Some experts argue that small companies like Small and Medium Industries consciously or unconsciously been practicing social responsibility, while other experts argue that social responsibility is a burden that inhibits small companies to promote their business thrive.The lack of a strong theoretical literature makes an understanding of social responsibility in the sector of Small and Medium Industries interesting for further study. Particularly in developing countries like Indonesia where the characteristics of SMIs and the characteristics of the society who are bound in the territorial context plays an important role in shaping the perspective of social responsibility. Among the various theories, this study uses stakeholder theory and feminist ethical standpoint as a general framework to analyzes social responsibility of SMIs. This study uses qualitative descriptive approach and collects data through in-depth semi-structured interviews using open questions to the owner of SMI and the stakeholders. This research was conducted in three areas: Dusun Cengkehan, Giriloyo and Karangkulon which are included in the Sentra Batik Tulis Giriloyo, Wukirsari, Imogiri, Bantul, Yogyakarta. This study found that social responsibility can be seen from various aspects in the IKM daily activities where such activities was considered normal (taken for granted activities) for the actors and stakeholders. The results of research in the field have also found the key stakeholders of IKM in the Sentra Batik Tulis Giriloyo in the practice of social responsibility, i.e: the local community such as youth groups, represented by the young youth, the batik artisans, customers, Dukuh, government agencies, such Dinas Ketenagakerjaan Kabupaten Bantul. The results of critical analysis can be concluded that social responsibility is carried out by SMIs in the Sentra Batik Tulis Giriloyo not use the term "social responsibility" and not clearly integrated into their strategic plans. There are several areas of interest specifically in comparison with the concept of social responsibility theory that developed in general that the motivation for the act of social responsibility, the things that affect the behavior of them full of cultural norms, religious, and empathy for the chairman or owners of IKM to poor people in the vicinity. The research has implications in improving the understanding of social responsibility by small companies. However, many factors such as cultural differences, theory differences and methodology differences makes this study limited to the territorial context and difficult to compare with other studies in another place.
