ABSTRACT This research entitled "Utilization of Social Capital as a Strategy to Survive Poor in Sri Rahayu Village, Karangklesem, Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency" explores about social capital that exists in society, survival strategies of society and the utilization of social capital as a survival strategy for the community. The concept of social capital that is used as a reference is a property of some figures such as Pierre Bourdieu, James Coleman, Francis Fukuyama and Robert Putnam. While the concept of survival strategies used as a reference is the property of Edy Suharto about the survival strategy of active, passive and networks. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Informant determining technique used in the research is purposive sampling. The data collection is done by in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. Sources of data in this research were obtained from two sources: they are primary data and secondary data. Data analysis technique used in the research is Interactive Analysis of Milles and Huberman. These results indicate, first, there are some social capitals which are adequate strong found in poor societies in Sri Rahayu village, such as citizens are trusting each other, good social networks, reciprocity or mutual relations, and mutual cooperation. Second, the survival strategies which are commonly used by the community are working hard, saving money, and taking advantage of Indonesian Health Card in order to get free service of medication at clinics. Third is the utilization of social capital to survive in the economic aspects, such as request / loan groceries to the neighbors, and owe money to neighbors or moneylenders. Then on the social aspects, they utilize social capital as a facility to request aid in the form of services and they feel the comforts of life, compactness when solving problems together, in tolerance that created by social capital itself. Therefore, it is expected that poor societies in Sri Rahayu village to keep and preserve social capital which is already well established, not only to survive but also to be able to have a better life. It is also expected that the government should pay more attention to the fate societies in Sri Rahayu village, for example by providing entrepreneurship training routine and periodic as well as intensively assistance for then it is expected to be useful in the future. Furthermore, for the next researchers are expected to be able to reveal more about the unique culture or subculture problems that exist in the village. This subculture is a true foundation gives rise to the bonding within the society and then creates a reliable social capital as one of the strategies to survive the poor societies in Sri Rahayu village.
