Studi Komparasi Strategi Penggalangan Donasi Kecil Obama dan Jokowi

Abstract In a presidential election, candidates need funds to finance the campaign. In the United States of America, candidates can obtain campaign funds by public funds provided by the government with a limited amount or through fundraising. While in Indonesia, the candidate generally obtain funds from political parties and companies. In the U. S. election in 2008, Obama was the first candidate who refused public fund provided by the government in the general election. He is known as a candidate who succeed in small donor fundraising in the election of 2008 and 2012. While in the presidential election in 2014, for the first time in Indonesia, Jokowi obtained campaign funds by organizing fundraising activities. Both Obama and Jokowi emphasized about the amount of small donations raised in public even though both still received large donations. The study compared the strategy of raising small donations between Obama and Jokowi. Furthermore, this study will describe the reasons why Obama and Jokowi chose to raise small donations though it requires more donors and takes a long time. Obama and Jokowi raised small donations to show that their commitment that their government policies would prioritize the people and to show the amount of support from the people, Obama and Jokowi also utilized the presidential election with candidates who has polarizing images to obtain a large number of small donations.
