ABSTRACT Relations with the media is the core activity of public relations among another public relations’s tasks, it is because the ability of the media to disseminate information to the another public of organizations and the community at large about the organization. However, in practice, it is not easy for public relations practitioners to manage relationship with the media. BPK as the state financial audit institution also face problems in managing the relationship with the media. The problems faced included a lack of understanding of the media crews about BPK and audit activities undertaken by BPK, BPK audit results received less media publicity and a lack of professional expertise BPK public practitioners in managing relations with the media. This study analyzes how the public relations strategy of BPK in managing relationships with the media in the period January 2014-April 2016, using qualitative descriptive methods. The analysis was performed by combining the concept of a public relations strategy proposed by Smith (2005) to model the relationship between public relations with the media by Grunig and Hunt (1999). Considering the problems facing not only the management practices of media relations, but also a lack of professional BPK public relations against media, then the analysis also conducted to professionalism of BPK public relations practitioners, which in this study is seen as a factor that contribute to media relations strategy. Analysis were performed using the criteria of professionalism presented by Cutlip, Center and Broom (2006). The results showed that the public relations strategy of the BPK in managing relations with the media have not achieve optimal results, and BPK public relations practitioners can not be called as a professional public relations.
