ABSTRACT Cultural practice of a society could be scrutinized from texts produced by the society itself. The column of “Si Palui” in Banjarmasin Post as a local cultural-text that has been published for decades is one of the reflections of how society of Banjar carries their life. On Si Palui, the reflection of gender inequality is represented in humour where women are always treated as an object. Text, however, could never be separated from social context as it brings ideology within itself. The column of Si Palui is no exception. The representation of women on Si Palui illustrates how the people of Banjar deals with women in sociocultural practices. The focus of this research is exploring gender-inequality practices represented on Si Palui. This study applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis Method, where it is assumed there are connections between text, text producer, customers, as well as sociocultural practices surrounding the text. This research examines discourse of women as the object of humour associated with sexuality. On the micro level, women on Si Palui are mostly passive characters viewed always from the perspective of men, indicated by the quiet demeanor of the women characters who never give counterargument to men. On the mezzo level, the fact that all of the writers of Palui are men also influences the construction of discourse about women—let alone the sexist humour. On the macro level, the discourse of women in society is shaped by the practice of patriarchal ideology which set men on higher position than women. The patriarchal ideology is justified by the fact that the people of Banjar are devoted Moslems renowned for its “Islam Banjar.” Keywords: gender, text, CDA Norman Faiclough, patriarchal ideology
