ABSTRACT This study aims to understand the meaning of trashy goods merchants about their work, to describe a typical experience among men and women merchants in meaning of their work, and analyzing the working relationship between merchants in business activities. The study was conducted in Sleman regency, especially on trashy goods merchants in the sub-district of Moyudan, Seyegan, and Godean. This study used qualitative methods, with semi ethnographic approach based on individual analysis, involving 10 informants men and women merchants. Data collected through direct observation, indepth interviews, analysis of documents, and study of literature. Study results show work relations that exists between trashy goods merchants effect on the meaning of work. Work relations are formed based on the level of their business, the peddler, the small shanties owner, and the large shanties owner. Hence, the higher levels of business (large shanties owner) have a complex work relations, but have tenuous ties of cooperation, because their work more transactional relationship. Mid-level and small merchants (small shanties owner and peddler) have a limited work relations, but the strong cooperation ties in the form relational embededdness, based on mutual trust, kinship, and solidarity. The meaning work of trashy goods merchants can be seen from social, economic, and cultural aspects. From three levels of business have similarity meaning of work, which is a main source of income and livelihood for him and the family. Large shanties owner has meaning of work that stands out from the social aspect for gain social status and recognition from the public on its work. The peddler and small shanties owner interpret their work as a way of gain lawful fortune and keep the relations of friendship and kinship, a bond is formed patron-client mutually support each other. Likewise, if the meaning is viewed from a gender perspective based on the role and function in the family and society. Men merchants as the main breadwinners have orientations, targets, and greater ambition in the works. Men merchants supported by capital strength and negotiating skills more confidence in work. Men merchants did economic role in the family and social role in the community together side by side. In contrast to the women merchants work to earn additional income, the less ambitious and tend to accept their results (nrimo). However, women have perseverance, patience, precision, adherence to the bosses compared with men. Women merchants take responsibility in taking care of family financial management, ranging from the need to eat until the child’s school. In his role of society, women merchants tend to give priority social relations, so frequently disrupt of the stability and routine in work. Keywords: relations, meaning, work, merchants, gender
