ABSTRACT Chinese ethnic in Surakarta has many experienced discrimination and violence since the middle of the 18th century until 1998. A bad experience in the past is not a bit traumatizing and exacerbate social relations between ethnic Chinese with the natives. Therefore, this study is important to see the viewpoint of constructing indigenous Tionghoa ethnic as one mirror relationship between Chinese ethnic and indigenous in Surakarta. The focus of this study is to see the social construction which built by ethnic Chinese on indigenous groups in Surakarta after violence in 1998 and the differences between the older generation and youth generation of ethnic Chinese in constructing indigenous figure. This study uses the theory of social construction and identity formation. The researchers use a phenomenological approach to describing the construction of ethnic Chinese in Surakarta on natives. In the third dialectic moment, externalization would be easy to informants who are in the same family and the environment, which is both homogeneous and heterogeneous alike. In the process of objectivation, formed three different values on each informant. On internalizing the process of identifying themselves in the middle of the social environment. Informants who live in a family and have a homogeneous environment that racist views than those who live in the family and heterogeneous environments. This research found if there are 3 indigenous construction of the older generation and 3 construction on the younger generation. Construction of the natives by the citizens of Chinese ethnic older generation as a threat that is indigenous, native was out-group and no identity is superior between chinese and natives, all aligned. While the construction of the natives built by citizens of Chinese ethnic young generation of indigenous and tionghoa is different so there should be restrictions on friends, native is a friend but tionghoa better than natives, and natives are friends or family.
