This study did not speak about the role of social media as a channel of communication between activists. Instead, social media is seen as one of the strategies to achieve the movement’s aim. In other words, the purpose of this study is to see how the process of democratization going on in the Indonesian grassroots level through social media. Furthermore, this study also try to answer the question about how the transformation process of Bali Tolak Reklamasi movement’s strategy from social media activism into a real action in Indonesia. Clearly, this thesis is about social media as a movement’s strategy in the context of grassroots democracy. Researcher has chosen Bali Reject Reclamation of Benoa Bay as a case in this study because this movement can be classified into New Social Movement that use social media as one of their strategies, and able to continue their battle in real space. The main question in this research is how the democratization process going on in the Indonesian grassroots level through social media. This study uses New Social Movement by Rajendra Singh (2002) as a main of theoretical framework. Nonetheless, there are several supporting theory such as: Revolution 2.0 by Merlyna Lim (2014), Cyberprotest by Wim van de Donk (2004), Democracy in Beetham (1999) definition, and factors of strategy transformation process that was formulated from literature review by researcher. The method that be used in this research is a case study. Finally, thesis from this study is: “Social media has a position as a New Social Movement strategy, which facilitates the strategy of reasoning and reflection in the matter of mobilization. Additionally, social media could encourage the representation of democracy when social media activism successfully transformed into real action as a strategy to change public cyberdiscourse into a political agenda”.
