ABSTRACT The consequences of globalization in every town exposed to challenges and competitiveness for mutual competed together as a competitive resource. A good reputation makes a city to attract the interest of stakeholders and support the success on the stage of world competition. The research seeks to understand the sejauhmana reputation of the social and cultural environment of the city according to the view of the journalists. The reputation of the social and cultural environment of the city is made up of a unique identity and image projected on a consistent basis to the public. The reputation of the social and cultural environment of the city pushed constituent factors i.e. Soft power and Competitive Identity. This research was done with a qualitative approach to explore the soft power and the competitive identity of Yogyakarta city. Soft power for the city reflected the values in everyday life of communities living in Java culture. Competitive Identity rooted in Yogyakarta city from its identity as a city that became a center of Javanese culture. The combination of past history with modernity into a unique identity for the city of Yogyakarta. The reputation of the city of Yogyakarta, which is served from the grasp of journalists showed that values their cultural traditions that are embedded in the social life of the community since hundreds of years, has established a reputation as a city of strong character.
