ABSTRACT EDITORIAL POLICY DIFFERENCES KOMPAS AND KEDAULATAN RAKYAT (Case Study News About Important Events in the Reported UGM Kompas and Kedaulatan Rakyat period from June to November 2014) Oleh: Satria Ardhi Nugraha The Higher Education Institution’s image is built by the work shown by the institution itself. Yet, work is not the only factor determining one’s image. The Institution needs media to publish its work in order to catch public attention. Mass media, especially newspaper, have an important role to build one’s image because the media has the strength and capability to reach a broader and larger audience. The sum of news related to UGM published by Kompas from 2005 to 2010 was increasing. The number was decreased in 2007, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Meanwhile, the sum of news related to UGM published by Kedaulatan Rakyat was increased from 2005 to 2011. The number was decreased in 2012 and 2013. Analyzed by the content of the news, news published by Kompas and Kedaulatan Rakyat has its differences. It indicates the fact that there is a difference between both editorial policies. This particular phenomenon is worth investigating. Qualitative research method with a case study approach is used in this research. This research is focusing on editorial policies used at Kompas and Kedaulatan Rakyat on publishing news related to crucial episodes in UGM on June-November 2014. The implementation of editorial policy at Kompas and Kedaulatan Rakyat refers to the concept of news values. News values used at Kompas and Kedaulatan Rakyat are significant, newness, impact, proximity, human interest, conflict and unique.
