ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to describe the intercultural communication competence which is owned by Malaysian students from Malaya, Chinese, and Indians ethnicities who enrolled in USU. Intercultural communication competence consisting of the motivation competence of intercultural communication, the knowledge competence of intercultural communication and the skill competence of intercultural communication. This research used the competence of intercultural communication theory initiated by Gudykunst (2003), Deardorff (2006) and Samovar (2010). The data obtained from in-depth interview with six Malaysian students, the informants question forms which filled by a professor and three Indonesian students through email, and literatures studies. The research implemented a qualitative approach with case study method. The results showed that the motivation of intercultural communication competence of Malaysian students from the three ethnicities were equally good. They definitely realize the urgency of communication in building relationships within their new cultural environment so that it could motivate them to establish communication and relations with Indonesian students. Meanwhile, the Malaysian students from Malaya ethnic has better knowledge of intercultural communication competence rather than Malaysian students from Indian and Chinese ethnics. It can be seen from the knowledge of the customs and cultural values that have held by students of the Malaya, as well as the personal connection that exists between students of Malaysian Malaya and Indonesian students. Intercultural communication skills of students from all three ethnicities were quite good, although the strategies that they used in demonstrating communication skills were different. In general, these Malaysian students were in the level of Conscious competence. This is because students from all three ethnicities are fully aware of the communication role in building and maintaining intercultural relations, and at the same time are also be able to perform actions that can assist them in building and maintaining these relationships.
