2015 | Tesis | Ilmu Hubungan InternasionalAbstract On the beginning of 2012, the re-emergence of national car project through the launching of Esemka in Surakarta managed to bring a huge fuss to the public in Indonesia. However, the Indonesian government has set up a policy where it is most likely would not pursue national car project, following the recent trend of automobile industry: integrating to the global production network. This thesis is aimed to analyze the problems and prospect of Esemka development in Indonesia within the changing context of automobile industry from being treated and perceived as national industry into a global industry. Government is no longer the strongest actor to decide the growth of automobile industry in national level. It has to give up its influential position to non-state actor, nonetheless the global automobile maker, MNCs or TNCs, thus affecting the condition of national automobile industry as an integrated part of a global automobile industry. Whereas the diminishing role of governments from governing to facilitating only has been taking place since 2000s, it is strongly believed that the changing context of automobile industry into global industry will also forced Esemka to not rely on government support for the advancement of its development plan.
