Peranan Aung San Suu Kyi dalam Masa Transisi Politik Di Myanmar Periode 1990-an -200-an

Abstract Myanmar has been ruled by military authoritarian regime since 1962.The military involvement in the Government structure started by the coup d’etat carried out by General Ne Win. By then the military regime applying single-party political system, civilians have no opportunity to participate in the government structure. The absence of supervision and control of the people over the course of the military government then led them to gain advantages, especially in the economic field. This led to social and economic gap between the elite among military and the people. Such conditions raising protests from the people and bring forth to pro-democracy movements led by Aung San Suu Kyi. This research uses qualitative method where taken direct interviews with some correspondents as primary data resources and mixing with literatures as secondary data resources. Analyze with political transition theory and structuralism theory, this research tries to answer the question about how does Aung San Suu Kyi’s role in the political transition in Myanmar. Using these theories, the writer tries to show Aung San Suu Kyi’s role shifting from1990’s to 2000’s. Refering tothe result of the research, the writer found that Aung San Suu Kyi experiences the role shifting between the two periods studied. In the1990’s, Aung San Suu Kyi stepped forward as a pro-democracy activist, and in her effort to encourage the democratization process in Myanmar, she did some strategies to strengthen the grassroots movements. Her mission at this time was to break down the military regime. Meanwhile, in the2000’s, especially when she has been released under house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi is now serves as member of the parliament and by thus change her role to a politician. Her mission at this time is to amend the undemocratic 2008 Constitution, this Constitution had impeded her desire to run for Presidential Candidate in 2015 upcoming election.
