ABSTRACT The G20 is believed to be a breakthrough in multilateral cooperation forum in order to constructing the principles of openness, connectivity and global partnership for building something called a new international economic and political order in the 21st century. This forum consists of 19 countries and the European Union with the total amount of GDP has reached at well over 85 per cent of the global economy as well as two-third of the world market. The research uses a constructivist perspective which emphasises the world and its material aspects as a social structure that is constructed by non-material factor, i.e. identity. This is very imperative because of the fact that the state’s behaviour or policy has basically influenced by its identity. The research shows that despite of the fact that the G20 was cemented by the Western countries in the G7, but the G20 has now developed into something called "a battlefield of identity" between the politics of unipolar identity of the G7 and the multipolar identity of the BRICS. The power of the politics of identity between the two forums has proven to greatly influence of their behaviour. The polarity of collective identity in the G20 is due to the collective identity of G7 and the BRICS are incompatible. Indonesia’s identities have built based upon three main pillars that are an Islamic tradition, modernity and democracy. Those three pillars of identities have proved to influence of the behaviour of Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy in the G20. The forum is very indispensable to Indonesia mainly for strengthening its identities more broadly. The power of the politics of Indonesia’s identities in the G20 leads to the multipolar identity of the BRICS. The politics of Indonesia’s identities and the collective identity of the BRICS are deliberately compatible, particularly with Russia as well as China. Keywords: Indonesia, Identity and the G20.
