ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to know strategy of conflict resolution by regional organization in Africa called African Union. The ethnic conflict between Hutu and Tutsi occurred in Burundi was the first conflict resolved by African Union through deployemnt of regional peace operation. The cooperation among surrounded countries in Africa which had good willing to keep the regional security stabilisation was the most important factor to inisiate the regional security. The good willing and international force to create peace supported by government were the main condition for conflict resolution. The first deployment of peace operation by African Union to resolve the ethnic conflict in Burundi was the real implementation of serious steps to keep the regional security. Then, by the means of creating the peace security in the regional level, cooperation among countries in politic, economy, social and culture could be made. Therefore, every country needs to fulfill the need of security of their own citizens. Character recognition of citizen and conflict area were so important to accelerate the peace making process in Burundi. Personnel composition of African Mission in Burundi (AMIB) which consisted of surrounded citizen in Africa was the effective way to urge the combatan to get into the peace process. The implementation of coercive strategy by AMIB was not only effective but also efficient to get the conflict escalation down. The conflict resolution which was implemented with preventive diplomacy and non intervention method were success to prevent conflict spread and made Burundi government believe in AMIB strategy. However, it proved that AMIB was the first successful peace operation deployment in Afrika. This research also explained the success of AMIB in resolving the ethnic conflict in Burundi with its shortage and restrictiveness.
