Thesis. Sociology Postgraduate Program. Gadjah Mada University. The background of this research is departing from the phenomenon of poverty and drought that has always struck in Gunungkidul district, it is caused by a source of income from the dry land agriculture which is not enough to meet their daily needs of the societies (people from Gunungkidul) in that area. The decision to perform circular migration to the city of Yogyakarta is considered as an appropriate solution amid economic trouble, but on the other hand, migrants is also tied to social ties and cultural psychological an obstacle for them to migrate in the long term. Here are the remittances as a form of attachment between migrants who are the same area of origin, and then they play an important role in maintaining family relationships between them and their family members. The remittances that sent by circular migrant to their home villages are not only in money, but also in the form of goods and the ideas. The focuses of the problems that will be revealed in this research are to determine: (1) How the use of remittances for the merchant families of migrants circular; and (2) How the effect of remittances on circular migration activity to changes in the social structure of their origin place. When observe to the impact of remittances as a result of the activity of migration, migrant family members who remain in the area of origin and non-migrant families also become the unit of analysis in this research. The research was conducted in the village of Krambilsawit, sub district of Saptosari, district of Gunungkidul. The method which is used in this research is case study to learn, explain, or to interpret the activity of circular migration as well as the use of remittances. To conduct this study that the informants is focused on five cases of migrant domestic circular in Krambilsawit village. The lives of informants who are already married will be able to give clear information of their activities that are use of remittances in the level of meet the needs of households when compared with the unmarried migrants. The research results show that the use of remittances from circular migration activity in the village of Krambilsawit mostly allocated to meet the needs of domestic consumption, the rest of the remittances are used for saving and investment. The findings in the field that have occurred in the village of Krambilsawit transformation brought by migrant remittances to their home villages were circular initially remittances to fulfill consumption needs to change into a form of social investments that have an impact on changes in the structure and social status that is characterized by the emergence of social class skipper in the village, even more broadly remittances also have an impact on rural economic development with the emergence of independent business people who started coloring stretching to the Krambilsawit village rural economy.
