ABSTRACT Research on tattoo from political perspective has not been studied yet, then deepening study related to that object is necessarily taken by researchers. Through all sort of its development, tattoo has left its nature function as a culture of a certain ethnic group. It is caused by the message of tattoo, which is more complicated, an effective medium in predicating powerful effect on its owner. Means that, tattoo has a central role and multi-meaning; Besides it is about social surface that shows affiliation of function on owned tattoo, it reflects an expression of a certain individual or group power. For brevity‟s sake, this thesis is all about operation of power in symbolic arena, and about tattoo embodied to men in Bali. This thesis is also seeking things on how impact and that symbolic power operation worked in daily life, such as political identity and capital power operation in tourism industry of Dewata island, especially in private security business. By using phenomenology method in investigation and process comparison, perhaps it will describe deepening meaning. Next, this investigation uses theory of Bourdieu (Habitus x Capital) + Arena = Practice, by ways of that formula, become explainable of how power practices of tattooed men in Bali, in term of writer is called pejantan Bali. With that approach and research method, I expect it will answer research question, that is; how is tattoo related to power?. Used data in this research is consist of primary and secondary data. Primary data pervades perceptions, principles, views that got by deep interview with some pejantan Bali (Laskar Bali, Baladika and Pecalang). Meanwhile, secondary data pervades the facts or existing problems in previous studies, by taking relevant variables. This secondary data comes from literature study, and emphasizes direct or indirect variable in previous research on tattoo. By reiterating narration on power of tattooed men in Bali, this research uses Bali‟s politic of security as arena as it will reveal a pattern of struggle, competition to obtain, and maintain a certain position based on capital ownerhip of the tattoo owners. Meanwhile, the power of tattooed men is seen as social practice which has dimension of time and space, unconsciously it has been arranged and organized. This research moves from the concept of tattoo generaly, then narrows to the context of political activities of tattoo owners in attempt to reap/to get power. In search revealed that in Bali‟s politic of security of tatto owners are not aware dealing with “discipline”, namely direction, coercion, habituation on how they have style and capital. Furthermore, many indications of the used of pejantan Bali by certain actors such as community organization and security service user that makes them for their political and economic interest. That logic is perpetuated through cultural instinct of society/community organization in offering a distinctive behavior presentation (muscular, grim and breaking / dashing, prestige and profesional), meanwhile the culture of security service users also strengthen through “myth retention‟ (read: tight rules of security service users in Bali) that “the tattooed, the dominant”. Both orientations intersect and contribute to each other in process of tattoo habituation, so next it created a concept of power of tattooed men; tattooing body, I‟am powerful. Key words: Power, Domination, Masculine, Politic of security, Tattoo, Pejantan Bali and Habitus
