ABSTRACT Confucianism has long been prevailed in East Asia through centuries and becoming the most prevalent ethics. The legacy of Confucianism, widely renowned as New Confucianism however is still strongly embedded in socio-cultural life of its citizens. Even in contemporary context, it is undeniable that New Confucianism remains as a cornerstone of socio-cultural and socio-political structures in this region. Nevertheless, the influence of Western thoughts which infiltrate and influence East Asian way also can not be denied. The role and legacy of Confucian ethics for contemporary socio-political development thus becoming debatable. This thesis is designed to review and analyze the new political character in East Asia from the standpoint of New Confucian ethics through comparative studies in three countries which are China, Japan, and South by addressing two research questions: First, why does New Confucian ethics is still relevant in viewing political character in East Asia?; and second to what extent does New Confucianism ethics affect contemporary politics in East Asia, particularly in China, Japan, and South Korea? These research questions will be analyzed through the concept of New Confucianism ethics, dialectics, and pragmatism. Finally, it can be concluded that New Confucianism ethics is still relevant in viewing political character in East Asia because it combines dialectical process with pragmatism which both imply contemporary (‘this worldly’) concepts and renewal dimension. New Confucianism as a synthesis which emerged from dialectic process by bridging two contradictions between the nature of traditional-conservatism of classic Confucianism as a thesis and other non-Confucian values, particularly that derived from Western thoughts and elevate them to a different discourse level could go along consistently with the character of East Asian politics itself that has become more pragmatic in past two decades. It influences contemporary East Asian politics in terms of political ideology, political system, and political movements in different forms and context.
