ABSTRACT Household food security is achievable with backyard utilization. Backyard is a land source which viable to use as food and household income source, if optimally utilized. The fulfillment is available with woman role who stay around the backyard. Women farmer who is identical with food consumption fulfillment has important role to enhance household food security in production process, post-harvest process, marketing, and household nutrition fulfillment. This role development is not supported with proper access and control for the women farmer, due to the women subordination because of bias gender. It is mostly happened at the research location which upholds Javanese tradition. Women participation is interesting to study due to the weak women control access because of subordination, especially relate to the backyard utilization as a household food source. The research purpose is to analyze the women farmer member participation’s related factors to support household food security at Gunungkidul Regency. The factors to study are the farmers’ characteristics namely age, education level, income, number of family, women farmer member attitude toward backyard utilization, and their perception on Field Agriculture Extension. The research method in use is the combination of quantitative and qualitative method, with the quantitative as dominant method. The area sample in use is purposive sampling at Gunungkidul Regency, namely Wareng Village, Wonosari District and Kedungkeris Village, Nglipar District. Those locations have been used as location of government program on backyard utilization, M-KPRL (Model Kawasan Rumah Pangan Lestari) in 2012. The research has been conducted in September 2013 until March 2014. The respondent sample which is taken proportionally consists of 46 people. The data taken are primary and secondary data. The data are analyzed explanatory and descriptively. The variable correlation was checked with Spearman Rank Correlation Methods. The analyze result shows there are no connection of respondent’s characteristics and participations, no connection of agricultural extension and respondent participation. Therefore there are positive connection of respondent’ attitude and participation to utilize the backyard in cognitive, affective, and conative.
