ABSTRACT Poverty in urban area tends to present the complexity of problems and cases including poor houses, homeless people, unemployment, and so on that remain unsolved. The issue of poverty also appears in Yogyakarta, especially in Kelurahan Tegalpanggung that is placed on the central of Yogyakarta; that place leads the creation of the slumps which are caused by the coming of urbanism who prefer to live in the surrounding area. Those conditions make each family who live on the area need to be flexible and dynamic; especially in facing both social and economic crisis. This research tries to identify the survival strategy of poor family by using qualitative description as the methodology; deep interview and participative observation is also applied as the primary instruments to collect the data on the sphere. Documents from the government administration which are related to the study are also used as additional information. Based on the data that are found on the sphere, I found out that poor family use social relationship as their modal by creating an intangible asset such as neighborhood, kinship, colleague, any other type of social gathering as an alternative act of safety value to maintain the life perpetuity. Modal can’t be separated from the intense interaction between each actor who takes participations which then lead to a strong social bound, integrity, inadvertent, the possibility in providing help, sharing another’s trial and tribulation as social glue, lubricants, to give an easy access toward information, loan, rare goods, and opportunity. Current situation and social condition also lead to the survival strategy in maintaining life perpetuity especially to fulfill life need, salary and job. Strategy is part of manifestation or rational choice that are conducted by poor family as a respond to the current situation by maximizing the use of mutual help from their family member and neighbor, by joining social gathering, creating good relationship with colleague and boss or taking part time job.
