ABSTRACT Fishermen who suffered a deprivation of life have been doing many adjustment processes to have a better life; one of them is by changing job. The job is collecting coal. The changes in fishing have implications for the changes in pattern of social relations, social values, lifestyles, and social capital of fishermen. This study aimed to find out, describe, explain, and analyse the changing that occur in the lives of fishermen due to job changing. This study uses qualitative method and cases study approach. Informants are determined purposively (purposive). The site of this study located in Pasar Bengkulu Village, Sungai Serut Sub-district, Kota Bengkulu, Bengkulu Province. Data collection was using observation techniques and interviews. The informant was coal collector fishermen in the coast. Processing of data was perfomed by classified and interpreted in a qualitative way from the beginning to the end of study. The stages of data analysis consisted of data reduction, data display, decision making and verification. The result of study revealed that work changing performed by fishermen have implications for changing in income, pattern of social relations, social values, lifestyles, and social capital in the lives of fishermen, that are described in more detail: (a) fishermen who become coal collector have their income increase. (b) the pattern of social relation has change especially in the nature of work relationship, originally to be closed and full of familiarity become rigid and only business oriented relationship. Originally form of work relationship was direct or face to face relationship becoming indirect relationship and involve third party as part of an ongoing process of interaction, mutual relationship in the lives of fishermen have also changed. (c) fishermen outlook about certain things that previously was appreciated and high valued to be changed and is considered no longer appropriate in the community. Concept that have high value on cultural values as ikan sejerek, bereh secupak, madar (get a kilo of fish and one-half kilo of rice, and then to be able to relax) have changed, the presence of wife and children in meeting the needs of family is also changing, the changes also occur in fishermen outlook on the values of money in their life. (d) The changes in lifestyle of fishermen are from simple to consumptive. (e) Other changes of fishermen who become coal collector are the changes in social capital in their life. Component of trust, networks, and norms have changed in fishermen community due to changing in job. Keywords: fishermen, changing in job
