Postmodern era has change how women are being portrayed in the media. Previously portrayed in modern films as the object of desire, women have now become the subject of desire, as told in Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet! This shift gives the impression of postfeminism values in films. But patriarchal unconsiousnes apparently still “working”, so further observation on how women are being represented in MBSM! is necessary. To study how women representation worked in MBSM!, Barthes’ semiotic analysis is then used. Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis is chosen because its wide scope reached not only on textual level and symbols, but also reading of signs, which is myth. In analyzing signs using Barthes’ mythology, reserachers no longer obliged to dissect signifier and signified separately on linguistic level. Knowing denotative meaning globally is sufficient because from these denotative signs myth will then be discussed. Starting from myth, researchers are then able to positioned certain signs belongs in which level of certain ideology. The result of this research showed that MBSM! have no difference from films in modern era. There is no representation of women in MBSM! that able to convey the message of pleasure of viewing and freedom of desire to women audiences, as postfeminism values suggested. This film only repeats classical narration in modern films, there is no depiction of autonomous, independent woman who has courage to choose her own path and be happy with her own decisions. Thus, this research found an athithesis which concluded that MBSM! as a film simply offers a new label for an age-old phenomenon, similar to feminist cinema in modern era that depicted women as weak and fragile being as subjects of misery.
