Occupy Wall Street Sebagai Sebuah Gerakan Sosial Baru

ABSTRACT The research is titled “Occupy Wall Street as a new social movement“. This research is purposed to understand how does Occupy Wall Street emerge and evolve an issue that began of a prolonged crisis in USA which afflict many people then developing internationally. This research is qualitative and the obtained data based on literature. This research uses a theory of new social movement. The researcher identifies Occupy Wall Street as a new social movement because Occupy Wall Street rejects hierarchical leadership system with no lifting leadership and freedom of the participants to argue participants in Occupy Wall Street also crossed class boundaries with the participation of students, workers, feminists, environmentalists, religious, leaders and others; the movement has also crossed borders the origin of the movement namely USA and have issues using disruptive techniques as well as mobilize mass opinion. The results show that Occupy Wall Street movement has managed to become a new social movement with the ability to build a collective identity “We are 99%” which is very effective to embrace all people. The progress of information and communication technology through the internet is also able to preach actions issues ideas and related news the movement to the whole world. With the background of the economic crisis which occurred in almost all the world the movement has successfully spread and spread the protest against the same problem. Occupy Wall Street movement has changed the public discourse related economic inequality especially in USA which is the polar capitalism Keywords: Occupy Wall Street, new social movement
