GAYA HIDUP MODERN SISWA KEDOKTERAN (ELEVE) DI BATAVIA 1851-1927

Kemunculan wabah di Jawa pada abad ke-19 membawa perubahan dalam layanan kesehatan dan pendidikan kedokteran bagi masyarakat Bumiputra. STOVIA sebagai sekolah pendidikan dokter pun menjadi tujuan masyarakat Bumiputera untuk menyekolahkan anaknya dengan biaya murah. Dalam kesehariannya di STOVIA para siswa yang disebut eleve terbiasa dengan gaya hidup modern ala Barat dengan kemajuan berpikir dan teknologinya. Tulisan ini berfokus pada gaya hidup modern eleve di STOVIA tahun 1851-1927. Dalam menjawab permasalahan tersebut, tulisan ini menggunakan sumber arsip, media cetak, memoar dan foto yang berkaitan dengan eleve dan STOVIA. Untuk melengkapi narasi digunakan roman sejarah dan artikel untuk memberikan gambaran suasana masa kolonial. Tesis ini menyimpulkan bahwa eleve yang bersekolah di STOVIA merasakan bagaimana kehidupan kelas menengah di Hindia Belanda. Kedekatan dengan budaya Barat melalui pendidikan dan fasilitas yang mereka dapatkan menciptakan sebuah habitus baru, gaya hidup yang lebih modern. Meski telah merasakan modernitas bangsa Barat, dalam diri mereka masih terdapat nilai-nilai tradisional dalam diri mereka. Eleve membawa simbol-simbol modernitas dalam diri mereka, sebagai modal untuk melakukan perlawanan terhadap pemerintah kolonial. Setelah lulus dari STOVIA, mereka menjadi dokter dengan gaji dan status sosial yang baru dalam masyarakat.

The appearance of outbreaks in Java in the 19th century brought about a change in health care and medical education for the Bumiputera community. STOVIA as a medical school became the goal of Bumiputera community to send their children to school at low cost. In their daily life at STOVIA the students called eleve are accustomed to the Western-style modern lifestyle with the advancement of thought and technology. This paper focuses on the eleve modern lifestyle at STOVIA in 1851-1927. In answering these problems, this paper uses archival sources, print media, memoirs and photos relating to eleve and STOVIA. To complement the narrative used historical novel and article to provide an overview of the colonial era. This thesis concludes that the eleve who attended the school of STOVIA felt how middle-class life was in the Indies. The proximity to Western culture through the education and facilities they create creates a new habitus, a more modern lifestyle. Despite the feelings of western modernity, within them there are still traditional values within them. Eleve carries the symbols of modernity within them, as the capital to fight against the colonial government. After graduating from STOVIA, they become doctors with new salary and social status in society.
