Romantic Call on Victims of War: Semiotic Analysis of Khaled Hosseini�s Novels

Romantisisme sering kali disalah pahami sebagai sesuatu yang bernuansa kasih sayang dan melulu soal percintaan. Padahal, Romantisisme merupakan sebuah paham yang kaya akan gagasan-gagasan besar yang juga melahirkan ide-ide besar, Romantisisme memang berumur tua namun tidak pernah kadaluarsa. Bahkan, warisan-warisan dari paham tersebut masih bisa kita nikmati dan tetap dapat dijumpai pada karya-karya sastra sampai sekarang. The Kite Runner (2003), A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) and And The Montain Echoed (2013) karya Khaled Hosseini yang bercerita tentang keadaan korban-korban perang Afghanistan menjadi menarik untuk dibahas dengan tidak terus-menerus terpuruk dalam penderitaan dan kesengsaraannya, penelitian ini menawarkan melihatnya dari sudut pandang Romantisisme yang intens namun lembut. Ditambah dengan fakta ketiga novel ini merupakan best seller mengindikasikan bahwa Romantisisme tetap bisa dinikmati oleh khalayak ramai terlepas dari jamannya. Penelitian ini menunjukkan signifikansi ide-ide Romantisisme dalam proses dramatisasi narasi, perbandingan keadaan nyata dengan keadaan fiksi, dan elemen-elemen Romantisisme yang muncul dalam novel, tokoh-tokoh dan pengarangnya. Kata kunci: Perang, Korban Perang, Romantisisme, Perang Afghanistan.

Romanticism often narrowly understood as a nuance of affection and considered to be identical with romance. Whereas, it is a very rich ism and provides broad notions in its perspective, Romanticism is old but gold. This research discusses the Romanticism�s legacy in 21th literary works, The Kite Runner (2003), A Thousand Splendid Suns (2007) and And The Montain Echoed (2013) by Khaled Hosseini tells the story of the victims of war in Afghanistan. It is interesting to see the struggle of the victims of war not merely as something depressing or miserable, this discussion offers to see it in the perspective of Romanticism. Moreover, the fact that these three novels are labeled as best seller indicates that the idea of Romanticism can always improve and still enjoyable regardless the period of time. This paper shows the significance of Romanticism in the dramatization of the narrative works, the juxtaposing of the real situation and the narrative, and the elements of Romanticism that relies on the novels, characters and the author.
