Spiritualitas Berbasis Bumi: Narasi Survival dalam Novel Life of Pi Karya Yann Martel

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui posisi Yann Martel dalam narasi survival yang diuraikannya dalam novel Life of Pi. Martel tidak hanya menyajikan kisah perjuangan Pi agar tetap bertahan hidup. Lebih lanjut, Martel juga berfokus pada perefleksian relasi antara manusia dengan alam, terkhusus binatang. Martel mengeksplorasi relasi dalam keterhubungan spiritual yang berdasar pada kesetaraan, sekaligus menghadirkan hierarki dalamnya. Hal ini memunculkan persoalan: (1). Bagaimana narasi survival dihadirkan oleh Yann Martel dalam novel Life of Pi? dan (2). Mengapa narasi survival diuraikan demikian oleh Yann Martel dalam novel Life of Pi?. Untuk mengetahui posisi Martel, penulis menggunakan konsep spiritualitas berbasis bumi milik Starhawk . Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan, diketahui bahwa dalam narasi survival, Martel menghadirkan pola relasi yang mengarah pada gagasan spiritualitas berbasis bumi. Akan tetapi, spiritualitas berbasis bumi yang diuraikan Martel juga masih memuat pada cara pandang dualistik yang hierarkis dan dominatif. Sehingga, spiritualitas berbasis bumi yang dihadirkan Martel dalam narasi survival ini terlihat tidak utuh. Namun di balik itu, Martel sekaligus juga memperlihatkan efektifitas spiritualitas berbasis bumi dalam melingkupi kontradiksi–kontradiksi yang ada. Martel menunjukkan spiritualitas berbasis bumi manakala dihadapkan dengan sesuatu yang lain, yang dalam hal ini berupa kerancuan-kerancuan di dalam spiritualitas berbasis bumi yang dinarasikan, seperti ketidakutuhan ekualitas serta preservasi yang terlihat masih menomorsatukan kepentingan manusia. Martel masih berusaha memadukan dua sisi yang berbeda, di mana di satu sisi manusia dalam usahanya untuk bertahan hidup akan bergantung pada alam dan di sisi lain, manusia tetaplah harus menjaga keseimbangan alam.

This study aims to find out the position of Yann Martel in the survival narrative which he explained in Life of Pi. Martel is not only presents the story of Pi’s survival, but he also focuses on the relation between human and the nature, especially animals. Martel explores the spiritual relation which is based on equality, yet presents the hierarchy within it. This situation raises the following problems: (1). How is the survival narrative presented by Yann Martel in the novel Life of Pi ? and (2). Why is the survival narrative described that way by Yann Martel in novel Life of Pi?. To find out the position of Martel, the writer used the earth-based spirituality proposed by Starhawk. Based on the study conducted, the result shows that in the survival narrative, Martel presented the relation pattern which tends to earth-based spirituality concept. However, the earth-based spirituality which he described still use dualistics point of view which direct to hierarchy and domination. Thus, the earth-based spirituality concept presented by Martel in the survival narrative seems like incomplete. But beyond that, at the same time Martel also shows the effectiveness of earth-based spirituality on covering the contradictions. Martel points the earth-based spirituality when faced the other. In this case is the confusion within the narrated earth-based spirituality, such as the incompleteness of equality and the preservation which still seems prioritizes the human interest. Martel still tries to integrate two different sides, which in one side human in their survival effort will depend on nature. While on the other side, human still have to preserve the harmony of nature.
