The Element of Narrative Time in Russell Hoban's A Bargain for Frances

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis unsur waktu naratif dalam A Bargain for Frances karya Russell Hoban. Sebagai cabang dari studi dalam bidang strukturalisme, wacana naratif yang dicetuskan Gerard Genette diterapkan sebagai pendekatan teoritis dengan pembahasan yang dibatasi hanya pada teks naratif. Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi tiga unsur naratif, yakni susunan naratif, durasi dan frekuensi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa A Bargain for Frances adalah bentuk narasi sederhana tanpa kompleksitas susunan cerita yang mencakup distorsi temporal yang rumit. Tipe narasi semacam ini mengarahkan pembaca sepenuhnya pada perkembangan plot ke masa depan tanpa rasa ingin tahu untuk menelisik apa yang telah terjadi di masa lalu. Durasi dalam teks naratif ini menggunakan adegan sebagai tipe gerak utamanya. Jenis gerak ini membuat pembaca mudah memahami isi teks naratif tanpa memberitahu lewat kata sifat yang rumit dalam deskripsi, tetapi menunjukan peristiwa lewat tuturan langsung dan aksi. Sementara itu, jenis frekuensi dalam karya ini didominasi oleh segmen singulatif, baik segmen yang sekali menceritakan apa yang terjadi satu kali dan segmen yang menceritakan beberapa kali peristiwa yang terjadi beberapa kali.

This research is aimed to analyze the elements of narrative time in Russell Hoban's A Bargain for Frances. As a branch of study in the field of structuralism, narrative discourse by Gerard Genette is applied as its theoretical approach with the discussion limited only on the narrative text. The discussion of this research identifies elements of narrative time, which are order, duration and frequency. The result of this analysis shows that the work is a straightforward narrative without complex order that includes an intricate temporal distortion. The reader of this kind of narrative will be completely informed of the development of the plot into the future without curiosity to know what has happened in the past. The duration of the narrative text uses scene as its main movement. This type of movement makes the reader understands the plot easily without telling complicated adjectives through descriptions but with showing the events through directs speech and action. Meanwhile, the frequency in A Bargain for Frances is dominated by singulative section, both narrating once what happened once and narrating several times what happen several times.
