Apology Strategies Used By The English Department Students of Universitas Gadjah Mada

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki dan mengidentifikasi strategi permintaan maaf yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa jurusan Sastra Inggris, Universitas Gadjah Mada, sesuai dengan teori Cohen dan Olshtain (1983) beserta kombinasinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan penyebaran DCT (Discourse Completion Tasks) tanpa ada sesi wawancara. Responden yang berpartisipasi berjumlah 40, yang terdiri dari 20 responden perempuan dan 20 responden laki-laki dari angkatan 2012-2013.Terdapat dua objektif dalam penelitian ini yaitu, mengidentifikasi jenis strategi permintaan maaf yang seringkali digunakan, dan mencari tahu adanya pengaruh status sosial dan gender lawan bicara terhadap pemilihan strategi permintaan maaf responden. Dalam penelitian ini, ditemukan total kalimat permintaan maaf yang dianalisis berjumlah 240. Strategi permintaan maaf yang sering digunakan oleh kedua responden adalah IFID dengan total 192 respon. Sementara pengaruh status sosial dan gender dari lawan bicara mempengaruhi pemilihan strategi permintaan maaf dari responden laki-laki. Hal tersebut berbeda dengan responden perempuan yang cenderung menggunakan strategi permintaan maaf yang sama terhadap lawan bicara yang memiliki status yang sama atau lebih tinggi, Kata Kunci: Pragmatik, Tindak Tutur, Strategi Permintaan Maaf, DCT

Abstract This research aims to identify and classify the apology strategies and combinations used by the students of English department, Universitas Gadjah Mada, based on Cohen and Olshtains (1983) theory. This research used Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) to get the data. There are 40 respondents, consisting of 20 female, and 20 male respondents from years 2012-2013. In this research, there are two objectives, which are to identify the most used apology strategy and to find the effect of social status and gender to the respondents choices of apology strategies. This research found 240 apology expressions. The most used apology strategy by both respondents is IFID strategy with 192 responses. Moreover, social status and gender affect the choices of apology strategies for male respondents. In contrast female respondents, mostly used similar strategies to the interlocutor from the same and higher status.
