THE ORPHAN MASTER�S SON KARYA ADAM JOHNSON: NOVEL SEBAGAI SITUS HEGEMONI

INTISARI Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hegemoni yang dilakukan oleh pengarang melalui karya sastra yaitu novel dengan judul The Orpan Master's Son karya Adam Johnson. Teori hegemoni Gramsci digunakan untuk mengetahui formasi ideologi yang terkandung didalamnya, serta studi sastra Raymond William digunakan untuk mengetahui posisi novel sebagai bentuk kebudayaan popular. Novel The Orpan Master's Son karya Adam Johnson merupakan situs hegemoni yang mengandung dua ideologi di dalamnya; komunisme dan kapitalisme. Komunisme digambarkan oleh Johnson sebagai ideologi dengan sistem kepemimpinan diktator proletariat. Selanjutnya, ditemukan adanya kelas pejabat dan rakyat biasa dalam novel yang bertolak belakang dengan teori komunisme milik Marx. Dapat dinyatakan bahwa komunisme yang digambarkan oleh pengarang dalam novel tersebut adalah sebuah fase transisi menuju masyarakat komunisme. Kemudian kapitalisme dihadirkan sebagai oposisi komunisme. Kapitalisme menawarkan kebebasan individu yang dianggap tidak ada dalam sistem diktator proletariat. Ideologi-ideologi tersebut saling bertentangan satu sama lain. Terjadi negosiasi diantara ideologi-ideologi tersebut untuk memenangkan blok hegemonik. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan adanya keberpihakan pengarang kepada ideologi kapitalisme. Hal ini dapat dilihat dengan adanya keberpihakan tokoh-tokoh yang semula anti-kapitalisme menjadi pro-kapitalisme. Pada praktiknya, pengarang bukan hanya menghegemoni tokoh yang ia ciptakan di dalam novelnya untuk menyetujui pandangan kapitalisme, namun pengarang juga mencoba untuk menghegemoni pembaca melalui novel tersebut. Novel sebagai situs hegemoni mengandung ideologi pengarang yang kemudian disebarkan searah dengan penyebaran novel tersebut. Penyebaran idologi tersebut berhasil saat ideologi pengarang diamini oleh pembaca. Dalam tahap tersebut, maka pengarang telah menghegemoni pembaca tersebut.

ABSTRACT This research aims to determine hegemony conducted by the author with a novel entitled The Orphan Master's Son by Adam Johnson. Gramsci's theory of hegemony is used to determine the ideological formations contained therein, as well as Raymond William's literary studies used to determine the position of the novel as a form of popular culture. The Orphan Master's Son of Adam Johnson is a site that contains two ideological hegemony in it; communism and capitalism. Communism described by Johnson as the ideology of the proletariat dictatorship system. Furthermore, there was an official class and the common people in the novel as opposed to Marx's theory of communism. It can be stated that communism which is described by the author in the novel is a transitional phase toward the communist society. Then capitalism is presented as the opposition communism. Capitalism offers the individuals freedom which is not exist in a dictatorship of the proletariat. The ideologies contradict each other. Negotiations occur between these ideologies to win hegemonic bloc. Results from the study showed author take a side of capitalism. This can be seen from the characters that anti-capitalism become pro-capitalism at the end. Practically, the author not only trying to hegemony the characters he created in his novel to approve the capitalism, but the author also tries to hegemony readers through this novel. Novel as a site of hegemony contains the author's ideology which then distributed in line with the spread of the novel. Ideology deployment is successful when the author ideology shared to the reader. In that stage, the author has successfully hegemony the readers.
