Lexical Innovations in James Dashner's The Maze Runner

Para penulis cerita-cerita fantasi menciptakan istilahistilah baru dalam karyanya. Ketika menciptakan istilah-istilah baru tersebut, para penulis ini terkadang tidak memperhatikan peraturan-peraturan pembentukan kata baru yang telah ditetapkan oleh ahli morfologi sehingga mereka mengembangkan teknik-teknik pembentukan kata yang tidak biasa. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan teknik pembentukan kata yang tidak biasa (khususnya dalam bahasa Inggris) pada inovasi leksikal dalam novel The Maze Runner karya James Dashner. Kajian ini mengacu pada pengertian Rus mengenai inovasi leksikal, yang mengedepankan gagasan antara penggunaan suatu unit leksikal baru, modifikasi akar kata atau struktur semantik suatu kata dalam sebuah bahasa. Data yang teridentifikasi dikelompokkan dalam empat klasifikasi berdasarkan kelas katanya: kata benda, kata kerja, kata sifat dan kata seruan. Pengamatan dari berbagai konteks penggunaan setiap data dalam novel dilakukan untuk mengartikan inovasi leksikal dan untuk menganalisis proses pembentukan kata yang dialami oleh setiap unit inovasi leksikal. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa dari total 34 inovasi leksikal yang teridentifikasi, terdapat empat teknik pembentukan kata yang tidak biasa dalam bahasa Inggris, yakni pemajemukan dengan inti di sisi kiri, pemajemukan dengan elemen yang tidak dapat dikenali, pemajemukan dengan kombinasi tidak biasa, dan persajakan.

Authors of fantasy stories come up with plenty of new terms in their works. When inventing these new terms, they sometimes do not regard to the formal ways of forming words, i.e. the existing word-formation rules established by morphologists, thus they may have developed irregular wordformation techniques. Whether these irregular word-formation techniques and the lexical innovations themselves will get diffused and used by other people, however, were not the main concerns of the present study. This study sought to discover irregular word-formation technique(s) (particularly in English) behind the lexical innovations in the novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner. This study referred to Rus' definition of lexical innovations, which implied either 'the use of a new lexical unit, the modification of the root or of the semantic structure of a word in a language'. The identified data were then classified into four classifications based on their word class: noun, verb, adjective, and exclamation. Observation of the various contexts of each data in the novel was done to interpret the lexical innovations and to investigate the word-formation processes that each of them underwent. The findings showed that out of the total of 34 identified data, there were four irregular word-formation techniques in English: compounding with left-headedness, compounding with unrecognizable constituent, compounding with irregular combination, and rhyming.
