THE POLITICS OF REPRESENTATION OF AMERICAN JEWS IN HOLLYWOOD MOVIES: A STUDY OF BENHUR, THE CHOSEN AND SCHINDLERS LIST

Abstrak Keterlibatan Yahudi Amerika dalam industri film Hollywood lebih dari sekedar cerita sukses kaum imigran di Amerika. Datang dalam jumlah yang besar, umumnya berasal dari Eropa Timur, bangsa Yahudi Azkenazic ini, memiliki kontribusi yang besar dalam membangun Hollywood dan manjadikannya sebagai salah satu ikon film dunia. Meski dominan, bangsa Yahudi cukup berhati- hati dalam industry ini. Anti-Semitisme, Perang Dunia hingga Great Depression adalah hal-hal yang membuat mereka tidak nyaman di di depan kamera ataupun menunjukkan identitas mereka lewat film yang diproduksi, yang mana mayoritas Kristen merupakan penonton utama industri ini. Namun demikian kondisi ini berubah setelah Perang Dunia Kedua dan Gerakan Hak Sipil di Amerika sejak tahun 1960. Yahudi dan segala persoalannya kemudian muncul dalam berbagai representasi, yang tidak hanya merubah imej mereka di Hollywood, namun juga penerimaan masyarakat Amerika secara luas. Fokus pada tiga film , Ben Hur, The Chosen dan Schindlers List, penelitian ini mengungkapkan bagaimana bangsa Yahudi merepresentasikan diri mereka lewat film-film yang diproduksi, negosiasi, hingga perubahan yang dilakukan sebagai bangsa Yahudi Amerika. Menggunakan Teori Representasi Stuart Hall serta Analisis Wacana Kritis Theo Van Leuween sebagai pendekatan, riset ini fokus pada analisis teks dan gambar sebagai tanda yang merepresentasikan Yahudi dan keyahudian mereka dalam film- film tersebut Terkait film sebagai sebuah konstruksi, para pembuat film ini kemudian merekonstruksi Yahudi dalam bentuk yang berbeda di film-film yang diproduksi. Representasi ini berupa kontruksi imej sebagai respon dari stereotipi yang selama ini berkembang di masyarakat khususnya yang terkait dengan hubungan Yahudi- Kristen, negosiasi identitas sebagai bangsa Yahudi dan Amerika hingga dukungan dan loyalitas mereka pada negara Israel. Politik representasi ini juga memungkinkan mereka menyampaikan berbagai pesan kepada penonton tentang ambivalensi identitas mereka sebagai sebuah tradisi budaya dan agama, lukaluka sejarah, hingga posisi dan kedudukan perempuannya.

Abstract The involvement of American Jews in the Hollywood movie industry is more than just American immigrants success story. Arriving in large numbers and mostly from Eastern Europe, these Ashkenazic Jews then contributed to build and transform Hollywood movies as a world icon. Though quite dominant, the Jews seemed to be careful in this industry. Anti-Semitism, the World Wars, and the Great Depression were some of the things that made them uncomfortable of being in the spotlight or talking about their identity among the Christian audiences of the movies. However, the conditions changed after the Second World War and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Jews and Judaism later appeared in various representations that not only changed their image in Hollywood, but also garnered broader acceptance from American society. Focusing on three films: Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ, the Chosen, and Schindlers List, this research reveals the politics of Jewish representation through the movies they produced, including the negotiations and changes they made as a part of the American Jewish diaspora. Using Stuart Halls Theory of Representation and the Critical Discourse Analysis of Theo Van Leuween as an approach, this research focuses on the analysis of words and images depicted in those movies that represent the Jews both as an ethnicity and as a religion. Through depictions in these movies, the moviemakers constructed a different concept of Jews and Jewishness. These representations are in the form of altering Jewish images in response to the stereotypes that existed in society, especially their relations with Christians, negotiations of identity as Jews and Americans, as well as supporting their loyalty to the state of Israel. Through films, Jews also convey various messages to the audience about their ambivalence identity as a cultural tradition and religion, the wounds of history, and even the position of Jewish women
