Kematian Sebagai Instrumen Kekuasaan dalam Novel My Sister's Keeper Karya Jodi Picoult

Novel My Sister's keeper karya Jodi Picoult merupakan novel yang mengetengahkan fenomena masyarakat Amerika saat berhadapan dengan kematian. Permasalahan yang diangkat adalah sikap menjadikan kematian sebagai ancaman dan disangkal atau disebut juga sebagai forbiden death. Picoult mengetengahkan isu pengidap penyakit Accute Promieleokosit Leucemia (APL) dan designer baby yang kemudian mengungkap sikap dan tindakan masyarakat modern abad ini saat berhadapan dengan kematian. Terdapat juga pemanfaatan oleh agen kuasa yang mengambil keuntungan di atas wacana kematian tersebut. Penelitian ini ingin menguraikan bagaimana bentuk signifikansi kematian yang terdapat dalam novel MSK dilihat dari persfektif Focouldian dan bagaimana pandangan kematian dijadikan sebagai instrumen kekuasaan. Untuk menjawab permasalahan tersebut, peneliti menggunakan konsep kekuasaan Michael Foucault. Metode yang digunakan berupa metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa kematian dalam novel MSK yang dianggap sebagai forbiden death, merupakan sebuah bentuk praktik diskursif. Praktik diskursif ini melahirkan tindakan-tindakan penyangkalan kematian yang kemudian dimanfaatkan oleh agen-agen pemilik kepentingan untuk mendapatkan kuasa. Agen-agen yang memanfaatkan kuasa di antaranya; dokter yang dijamin oleh institusi kesehatan, orang tua, dan institusi jaminan kesehatan. Strategi dan mekanisme yang digunakan oleh agen kuasa untuk melegitimasi kekuasaan di antaranya dengan menggunakan bio-power meliputi pendisiplinan dan kontrol regulasi populasi, serta normalisasi dengan mengkategorikan tindakan normal dan abnormal. Setiap ada afirmasi kekuasaan terdapat anti kekuasaan. Bentuk resistensi dan negosiasi terefleksi dari karakter Anna di dalam novel yang terlahir dari proses genetic engineering. Resistensi Anna didorong untuk mendapatkan emansipasi medis agar mendapatkan kuasa atas tubuhnya sendiri. Semua kontestasi kekuasaan dalam novel MSK merujuk pada ciri kekuasaan dalam konsep Foucauldian di antaranya; kekuasaan tidak dapat dilokalisir, merupakan tatanan disiplin dan dihubungkan dengan jaringan, memberi struktur kegiatan-kegiatan, tidak represif namun produktif, dan kekuasaan juga menormalisir.

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult is a novel which explores the phenomenon of American modern society in facing the death. The problem issue was the advancing attitude of American modern society toward the position of death as a threat which is also being denied, consequently labeled as Forbidden Death. Picoult explored the issue of Accute Promieleokosit Leucemia (APL) patient followed by the designed baby. Subsequently, the issue was portrayed as the revelation of the attitude and action of American modern society in facing the death. In addition, there was a power utilization run by agents who took advantage from the death discourse. This study was aimed to reveal how the signification of death on My Sister's Keeper on the ground of analysis conducted through the Foucauldian perspective and how the mechanism of power relationship systematized. The researcher applied Michael Foucault theory, the concept of Power. Descriptive qualitative methodology was conducted on this research. The result of the study depicted that the Forbidden Death on the novel was considered as the formation of discursive practice. The discursive practice spawned the denial action toward the death. In addition, it was controlled by the agents for the sake of power. The agents who took advantage through their authority were doctor supported by health institution, the parents of patient, and health institution itself. The strategy and mechanism of the practice was conducted by the agents to legitimate their power such as bio-power, anatomy-politics of human body and bio-politics of the population regulatory control, and normalization. The affirmation of power is in close proximity to the power resistance. The power resistance and negotiation was reflected on Anna, a character on the novel who was born through the genetic engineering. Anna's resistance urged the obtaining of a medical emancipation through the authority of her body. All contests of power on My Sister's Keeper constituted of the characteristics on Foucauldian concepts such as power cannot be localized, power is a discipline order connecting to the network, power is a structured activity, power is not considered as repressive as it is productive instead, and the last consideration is that power is also normalized.
