Theodore Laurence's Character Development as seen in Louisa May Alcott's "Little Women"

Penelitian ini membahas tentang perubahan karakter dari Theodore Laurence dalam novel Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott. Penelitian ini dijalankan dengan mengaplikasikan Pendekatan Objektif oleh M. H. Abrams, piramida Freytag oleh Gustav Freytag, dan karakter dan karakterisasi oleh C. Hugh Holman dan William Harmon. Penelitian ini bermaksud untuk mengungkap bagaimana penokohan Theodore Laurence dan bagaimana karakternya berkembang di dalam novel. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa teks yang diambil dari buku Little Women karya Louisa May Alcott, yaitu berupa: plot, karakter, dan karakterisasinya (termasuk percakapan dan tindakan) yang mengandung tindakan dari Theodore Laurence, dialog dari karakter lain tentang Theodore Laurence, dan deskripsi langsung dari pengarang. Data yang terkumpul kemudian diklasifikasikan secara runtun sesuai riwayat hidup Theodore Laurence dan dianalisa menggunakan alur ceritanya. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa perubahan karakter dari Theodore Laurence ditandai oleh lima kejadian atau fase; latar belakang kehidupan Theodore Laurence, hubungan Theodore Laurence dengan keluarga March, Theodore Laurence bertemu dengan Amy March, Theodore Laurence jatuh cinta dengan Amy March, dan kehidupan pernikahan Theodore Laurence. Dari lima kejadian atau fase tersebut, perubahan karakter Theodore Laurence diperlihatkan.

The research discusses the character development of Theodore Laurence in the novel Little Women written by Louisa May Alcott. The research is conducted by applying M. H. Abrams' Objective Approach, Gustav Freytag's Freytag Pyramid, and C. Hugh Holman and William Harmon's character and characterization. it aims to reveal how Theodore Laurence is characterized and how his character develops in the novel. the data used in the research are taken from Louisa May Alcott's Little Women in the form of words containing plot, characters, and characterization (including dialogues and actions) which contains Theodore Laurence's actions, other characters' dialogues about Theodore Laurence and author's direct description. The data are then classified in chronological order of Theodore Laurence's life, and analyzed by using plot analysis. This research finds that Theodore Laurence's character development is marked by five events or phases; Theodore Laurence's life background, Theodore Laurence's relationship with the March Family, Theodore Laurence meets Amy March, Theodore Laurence falls in love with Amy and Theodore Laurence's marriage life. By those five events or phases, Theodore Laurence's character development is shown.
