The Characteristics of Dystopian Society in Lois Lowry's The Giver

Penelitian ini dikhususkan untuk menganalisis novel dari Lois Lowry yaitu The Giver. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengaplikasikan Perdekatan Objektif dari Abrams. Tujuan dari penulisan ini adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik masyarakat distopia pada novel, menganalisis mengapa novel tersebut dianggap sebagai cerita fiksi distopia dengan membelajari konsep utopia dan distopia. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini diambil dari The Giver yang terkandung pada kata, anal kalimat, dan kalimat, isi latar, alur cerita dan karakter. Data tersebut dianalisis untuk mengetahui karakteristik masyarakat distopia di dalam novel. Temuan utamanya adalah The Giver adalah cerita fiksi dystopia dimana semua karakternya sesuai dengan cerita fiksi milik Gottlieb.

The present research paper is devoted to the analysis of Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver. The research is conducted by applying Abrams’ Objective Approach. The purpose of the research paper is to find out the characteristics of dystopian society in the novel, analyze why the novel is considered dystopian fiction by studying the concept of utopia and dystopia. The data used in the research are taken from The Giver in the form of words, clauses and sentences containing settings, plot and characters. The data are analyzed to find out the characteristics of dystopian society in the novel. The main result shows that The Giver is dystopian fiction which suits all the characteristics of dystopian fiction proposed by Gottlieb.
