SEKOLAH PAUD GAJAH WONG: RASIONALITAS DIBALIK PENDIRIAN SEKOLAH DI KALANGAN KAUM MISKIN KOTA

INTISARI Komunitas Ledhok Timoho merupakan kumpulan kaum miskin kota dengan profesi sebagai buruh, pengamen, pemulung serta pekerja sektor informal lainnya yang mendiami wilayah di pinggir Sungai Gajah Wong di daerah Timoho, Kota Yogyakarta. Warga Komunitas Ledhok Timoho yang hidup miskin dan tidak memiliki hak izin mendirikan bangunan di wilayah tersebut mampu membangun sebuah sekolah yang diberi nama Sekolah Gajah Wong dan dikhususkan memberikan pendidikan bagi anak usia dini dari kalangan miskin. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui rasionalitas dibalik pendirian sekolah pada Komunitas Ledhok Timoho. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif. Teknik pengumpulan data diperoleh dari observasi, wawancara serta dokumentasi. Penentuan informan dipilih menggunakan purposive sampling. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan tiga hal. Pertama, proses munculnya Sekolah Gajah Wong didorong oleh adanya kondisi sosial, ekonomi dan lingkungan yang dijadikan sebagai rasionalitas warga serta TAABAH (Team Advokasi Arus Bawah) untuk mendirikan Sekolah Gajah Wong. Keberadaan sekolah bisa memenuhi kebutuhan pendidikan bagi anak mereka dan bisa menjadi pelindung bagi keberadaan komunitas. Kedua, keberadaan Sekolah Gajah Wong tidak terlepas dari partisipasi yang dilakukan oleh warga Komunitas Ledhok Timoho baik orang tua maupun anak. Partisipasi yang dilakukan warga Komunitas Ledhok Timoho didorong karena kesadaran akan adanya manfaat Sekolah Gajah Wong sebagai pelindung bagi komunitas. Ketiga, Sekolah Gajah Wong menerapkan nilai lokalitas dalam kegiatan pembelajarannya, sehingga menjadi sebuah ciri khas bagi keberadaan Sekolah Gajah Wong dan Komunitas Ledhok Timoho. Kesimpulan besar dari rasionalitas dibalik pendirian Sekolah Gajah Wong pada Komunitas Ledhok Timoho adalah sekolah menjadi pelindung keberadaan komunitas serta mampu memenuhi kebutuhan pendidikan anak usia dini yang seharusnya menjadi tanggung jawab negara. ABSTRACT Ledhok Timoho Community is a collective of the urban poor by profession as laborers, beggars, scavengers and other informal sector workers who stay in the region at the edge of Gajah Wong River in the area Timoho, Yogyakarta. Ledhok Timoho Community who live in poverty and do not have the right building permits in the region can build a school named Gajah Wong School that give education for young children in their area. The purpose of this research is to determine the rationality behind the established of the school in the Ledhok Timoho Community. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The technique of collecting data are from observation, interviews and documentation. Determination of informants selected using purposive sampling. The results of this research show three things. First, the established of the Gajah Wong School encouraged by their socio-economic and environmental conditions that serve as the rationality of citizens and TAABAH to establish Gajah Wong School. The school can fulfill the educational needs of their children and can be a protector for their community. Second, establishment of Gajah Wong School is inseparable from the participation of the Ledok Timoho Community, both parents and children. Their participation encouraged because they have awareness of benefits from Gajah Wong School as protector for their community. Third, Gajah Wong School implement the locality in learning. Application of the locality is used as a characteristic from Gajah Wong School and Ledhok Timoho Community. The conclusion of the rationality behind established Gajah Wong School at Ledok Timoho Community are school used as a protective of community and fulfill the educational needs for children that should be borne by government.
