Penelitian ini merupakan hasil dari ketertarikan peneliti terhadap maraknya perkembangan teknologi. Penelitian ini berjudul Fenomena Designer Babies dalam Film Dokumenter Who's Afraid of Designer Babies Karya Horizon BBC dalam Perspektif Etika Hukum Kodrat Thomas Aquinas. Penelitian ini membahas secara khusus fenomena medis di dalam film dokumenter Who's Afraid of Designer Babies karya Horizon BBC, yaitu fenomena rekayasa genetik pada anak agar mendapatkan kombinasi genetik yang optimal yang sesuai kehendak orang tua yang disebut desainer babies sebagai objek material. Pemikiran etika hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas merupakan objek formal yang digunakan untuk menganalisis perkembangan dan problem etis designer babies di dunia medis. Etika hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas merupakan ajaran etika yang berdasarkan pemikiran tentang kodrat manusia menurut Thomas Aquinas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah pertama, menjelaskan perkembangan dan problem etis designer babies di dunia medis. Kedua, menjelaskan pemikiran etika hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas. Ketiga, menganalisis problem etis designer babies di dunia medis dalam perspektif etika hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas. Peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif bersifat aktual untuk menganalisis fenomena designer babies dalam perspektif hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas. Peneliti menggunakan buku pokok yang mengulas tentang designer babies dan pemikiran hukum kodrat Thomas Aquinas sebagai bahan primer, serta bahan sekunder atau bahan pendukung mengenai objek material dan objek formal penelitian. Pada bagian analisa, peneliti menggunakan beberapa tahapan penelitian seperti verstehen, interpretasi, hermeneutika, dan induksi sebagai refleksi peneliti pribadi. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bahwa designer babies merupakan salah satu upaya manusia untuk mengakali batas-batas kehidupan dengan cara mengubah kodrat manusia. Thomas memandang bahwa manusia akan berusaha untuk bertahan hidup dengan teknologi namun harus sesuai berdasarkan hukum kodrat. Hasil penelitian ini adalah teknologi Designer Babies dalam perspektif Hukum Kodrat Thomas Aquinas tidak dapat melampaui kodrat alam manusia yang merupakan hakikat dari manusia sebagai makhluk hidup. Teknologi Designer Babies memenuhi aktualitas kodrat alam pada diri manusia secara sempurna. Penggunaan embriyo manusia dalam pemenuhan kodrat alam manusia menurut Thomas Aquinas diijinkan secara moral selama embriyo tersebut belum memiliki jiwa rasional.

This research is the result of researcher's interest about the widespread development of technology. The title of this research is Fenomena Designer Babies dalam Film Dokumenter Who's Afraid of Designer Babies Karya Horizon BBC dalam Perspektif Etika Hukum Kodrat Thomas Aquinas. This research specifically discuss a medical phenomenon in documentary film Who's Afraid of Designer Babies produced by Horizon BBC, the phenomenon is about genetics engineering in child in order to obtain an optimal genetics combination which is according his parents' will so-called designer babies as material object. Thomas Aquinas' thought about natural law is formal object that used to analyze the development and ethical problems of designer babies in medical world. Thomas Aquinas' Natural Law Ethics is ethical precept based on Thomas' though about human nature. There are some purposes of this research, first, to explain about development and ethical problems of designer babies in medical world. Second, to explain Thomas Aquinas' thought about natural law ethics. Third, to analyze ethical problems on designer babies in medical world with Thomas' Natural Law Ethics perspective. Researcher using qualitative research methods of actual problems to analyze the phenomenon of designer babies in Thomas Aquinas' thought about natural law. Researcher using books which describe about designer babies and natural law thought of Thomas Aquinas as primary materials, and also secondary materials or supporting materials regarding the material object and formal object of the research. In analysis chapter, researcher will use several research stages such as verstehen, interpretation, hermeneutics and induction as researcher's own reflection. The result of this research is that the phenomenon of designer babies is one of human's attempts to circumvent the limits of life by changing human nature. Thomas considers that the human will strive to preserve his life with technology but its must according natural law. The result of this research is the technology of designer babies in Thomas' Natural Law Ethics perspective supposed to fully actualized human nature as a creature, not beyond the human nature. Using embryo for realization human nature according to Thomas is morally acceptable as long those embryo is not in stage to have a rational soul.
