Productivity Spillovers from Foreign Direct Investment in Indonesian Manufacturing Industries

FDI diharapkan untuk membawa berbagai keuntungan bagi negara-negara yang menjadi tuan rumah, tidak hanya dalam bentuk transfer modal tetapi juga dalam bentuk transfer teknologi. Eksternalitas yang terjadi akibat transfer teknologi disebut sebagai productivity spillovers. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menangkap productivity spillovers dari FDI melalui horizontal, forward, dan backward linkage pada perusahaan manufaktur di Indonesia. Menggunakan data panel dari perusahaan manufaktur periode 2003-2013, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa estimasi fixed effects lebih tepat untuk menganalisis model yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil estimasi menunjukkan bahwa FDI spillovers berpengaruh positif dan signifikan melalui horizontal linkage. Sebaliknya, FDI spillovers berpengaruh negatif dan signifikan melalui backward linkage.

FDI inflows are highly expected to bring benefits to the host country, not only in form of capital transfer but also technology transfer. The externalities which occur from technology transfer are referred as productivity spillovers. This study intends to capture productivity spillovers from FDI through horizontal, forward, and backward linkages in Indonesian manufacturing industries. Using panel data of Indonesian manufacturing firms from the period 2003-2013, we find that fixed effects estimation is more appropriate to analyze the model specification of this study. The estimation result shows that FDI spillovers are positively significant through horizontal linkage and negatively significant through backward linkage.
