The Self-identity of Mixed-descent Woman Portrayed on "Night of the Water Spirits" by Barbara Bisco

Identitas diri merupakan isu terbaru atas kemunculan abad modern. Faktanya, secara spesifik, identitas diri atas keberadaan perempuan belum terbentuk dengan baik. Pada tahun 2011, Night of the Water Spirits diterbitkan sebagai dorongan akan representasi identitas diri perempuan. Karakter utama pada novel tersebut adalah seorang perempuan keturunan Inggris dan Thailand bernama Panida Duncanson. Karakter tersebut bercerita tentang sebuah penolakan terhadap pemosisian dan anggapan yang tidak tepat atas posisi dirinya sebagai individu keturunan campuran. Penelitian ini mengangkat tiga isu utama. Riset ini meneliti jalan hidup karakter utama sebagai gambaran akan identitas diri tokoh perempuan, aktualisasi dan kecenderungan diri terhadap identitas ditunjukkan dalam novel Night of the Water Spirits, dan bagaimana kehidupan politik perempuan berdarah campuran berlangsung sepanjang hidupnya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam meraih aktualisasi identitas diri, sebagai perempuan keturunan campuran, tokoh cenderung memilih untuk menjadi seorang perempuan Thailand. Hal ini disebabkan akan adanya penolakan dari pengarang terhadap anggapan Inggris sebagai negara pertama yang superior terhadap posisi Thailand sebagai negara ketiga, dimana anggapan tersebut pada dasarnya dimunculkan dari pandangan satu belah pihak, yakni Inggris. Selain itu, kemunculan adanya pilihan, kekuatan, dan kesetaraan dimana elemen tersebut menuntun kepada aktualisasi diri perempuan.

Self-identity is an up-to-date issue in accordance to the emergence of modern age. In fact, a specific self-identity toward woman�s existence has not been well established. In 2011, Night of the Water Spirits was published as the urge of woman self-identity representation. The main character on the novel is a British-Thai girl named Panida Duncanson. Her story is a breakthrough against the displacement and misperception toward her position of being mixed-descent individual. This research examines three major issues. The paper discusses the life trajectory of the main character considered as the portrayal on her self-identity, how the self-actualization and tendency of being a mixed-descent woman represented on Night of the Water Spirits, and how the life politics of mixed-descent woman takes place on the trajectory. The result shows that in order to seize the self-actualization on woman self-identity, mixed-descent woman concerned her tendency on her Thai side. The reason behind that portrayal is the perspective of the author breakthrough against the dialectic of British as first country which is considered as superior toward the position of Thai as third country, since the inequality construction of the dialect was proposed by British. In the second place, the emergence of choice, power, and equality in which the elements lead to the woman self-actualization.
