Johnny Cade's Plot-twist Character Development As Seen in S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders Novel

Penelitian ini menganalisis buku dari Susan Elois Hinton yang berjudul The Outsiders. Salah satu pemain utama dalam buku tersebut, Johnny Cade, menjadi objek analisis dari penelitian ini. Objektif dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa karakteristik yang dimiliki oleh Johnny. Melalui perjalanan dan perkembangan dari plot, maka perubahan dari karakteristik Johnny akan ditemukan. Penelitian ini mengaplikasikan teori objektif dari Abrams, karena teori ini merupakan teori yang cocok untuk mengalisis dengan metode membaca unsur intrinsic dari sebuah karya sastra. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik Johnny Cade berubah seiring dengan berjalannya alur cerita. Hubungan yang harmonis dan tidak harmonis yang Johnny jalin dengan lingkungannya memberikan dampak terhadap cara Johnny melihat kehidupan dan cara Johnny merespon terhadap hal-hal yang terjadi padanya. Karakteristiknya berubah setelah Johnny menemui sebuah konflik yang serius di dalam cerita. Pada awal buku, Johnny diceritakan sebagai seorang yang pasif dan penakut yang membiarkan orang lain menentukan jalan hidupnya. Kemudian, pada akhir cerita, Johnny berubah menjadi seorang pahlawan yang menginspirasi dan mendapatkan respek tidak hanya dari orang-orang yang menyayanginya saja, tetapi juga oleh musuh-musuhnya.

This research analyses the book of Susan Elois Hinton entitled The Outsiders. One of the main characters in the book, Johnny Cade, becomes the analysis object of this research. The objective of this research is firstly to analyze the characteristics or the traits Johnny possesses. Throughout the improvement and development of the plot, the chronological order of Johnnys characteristics changing will be found. This research employs Abrams objective theory since it is the one that meets the requirement since it analyzes works using the close reading method. The result of this assessment shows that Johnny Cades traits change during the plot. The harmonious and disharmonious relationship he builds with his environment affects the way he perceives life and responds to the things that happen to him. His characteristics change after he encounters a serious conflict in the story. In the introduction of the book, Johnny is performed as a passive and scared personality who lets other people decide for what happens in his life. Later, in the end of the story, Johnny turns into a hero who inspired and gained respect not only by the people who love him, but also those who claim as his rivals.
