ENCOUNTERING SURVEILLANCE: THEORIES OF POWER REPRESENTED IN DYSTOPIAN NOVELS

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan dan menunjukkan peran dari pengawasan dalam struktur kekuasaan dari masyarakat fiksi yang direpresentasikan dua novel populer distopia, The Giver dan Nineteen Eighty-Four. Riset ini menekankan pada analisis teori literatur tradisional dan non-tradisional, tema-tema yang ada dalam teori-teori tersebut, dan hubungannya dengan plot kedua novel tersebut. Teori-teori umum yang digunakan dalam studi akademik taktik pengawasan yang diaplikasikan pada kedua novel ini menyimpulkan bahwa taktik pengawasan yang dibahas dalam teori dan fiksi ini menegasi nilai-nilai Amerika. Novel-novel tersebut merepresentasikan visi yang pesimistik mengenai masa depan. Riset ini dilakukan secara kualitatif dan melibatkan novel, artikel, dan buku yang berhubungan dengan teori, dan juga sumber video daring. Teori Post-Nationalist begitu juga hubungan dari teori-teori literatur yang berkaitan dengan Amerika Serikat digunakan untuk mengorelasikan riset ini ke dalam bidang Pengkajian Amerika.

The goal of this research paper is to discover and show the role that surveillance plays in the power structure of the fictional societies represented in two popular dystopian novels. The research emphasizes the analysis of traditional and non-traditional literary theories, themes present in those theories, and their relationship with the plots in the aforementioned novels, The Giver and Nineteen Eighty-Four. Common theories used in the academic study of surveillance are applied to the novels and are used to conclude that surveillance tactics discussed in these theories and fiction novels deny common American values. A short reference is made to the novels as pessimistic visions of a possible future. This research is qualitative in method and includes novels, new articles, books related to theory, and online video sources. Post-Nationalist theory as well as the relationship of some of the literary theories employed to the United States are used to connect this research paper to the field of American Studies.
