BREAKING DEATH IN BREAKING BAD: ESCAPING DEATH MATTERS AS PORTRAYED IN WALTER WHITE

Kematian sebagaimana digambarkan dalam film bergenre criminal tidak hanya diwujudka secara eksplisit dimana kematian fisik dapat dieksplorasi secara langsung saat menonton film tersebut. Kematian memiliki peran yang signifikan dalam perkembangan cerita dalam fi lm. Dalam penelitian ini, kematian memberikan perkembangan yang cukup berpengaruh terhadap pemeran utama dalam sebuah serial televise bertajuk Breaking Bad. Konflik internal yang dialami Walter White sebagai pemeran utama merupakan bentuk responnya terhadap kematiannya yang sudah diprediksi akan datang. Dengan menggunaka pendekatan psikoanalisis, penelitian ini membahas perilaku yang ditunjukkan oleh Walter dalam menghadapi kondisinya yang sekarat melalui persaingan antara dorongan insting –eros dan thanatos. Penelitian ini juga menemukan peran kematian yang memainkan peran utama dalam perkembangan karakter yang dialami oleh Walter White dalam keseluruhan cerita.

Death as portrayed in crime genre movie, is not only manifested explicitly where the physical death can be explored directly while watching a movie. Death employs such significant role in the whole development of the story. In this study, death gives an influential development toward the main character on a TV series entitled Breaking Bad. The inner conflict within Walter White as the main character, is in respond to his predicted imminent death. Walter’s involvement in criminal world is a form of escape in dealing with the other truth that is being offered by the presence of death. By using the psychoanalysis approach, this study discusses behaviors which are performed by Walter in dealing with his dying condition through the competition between his instinctual drives –eros and thanatos. This study also finds the role of death which plays a major role in the character development of Walter White throughout the story.
