Tesis ini bertujuan untuk memahami proses perjalanan spiritual Black Elk menjadi seorang shaman atau seorang dukun, melalui sebuah memoar. Memoar Native American ini adalah sebuah media untuk menunjukkan kultur masyarakat Oglala, kepercayaan, pengetahuan, kemampuan, dan prakteknya. Selain itu, tesis ini juga membantu pembaca untuk memahami peran perjalanan spiritual seorang shaman terhadap masyarakat Oglala, karena masyarakat tersebut sangat lekat kehidupannya dengan spirit dan alamnya. Pendekatan interdisipliner yang melibatkan pendekatan sastra, sosial dan sejarah, budaya, dan psikologi telah diterapkan untuk memperkuat pemahaman tentang Native America, terutama mengenai proses menjadi shaman untuk masyarakat Oglala di dalam memoar. Pendekatan kultur membahas perjalanan spiritual Black Elk dengan melihat kultur suku Oglala. Karena memoar adalah narasi, maka teori narasi membantu untuk menghubungkan beberapa aspek untuk menyampaikan identitas Black Elk dan nilai-nilai yang terdapat pada sukunya secara tersusun. Pendekatan sosial dan sejarah diaplikasikan untuk melihat satu per satu kondisi suku Oglala, sehingga peran spirit dan alam akan terlihat. Pendekatan psikologi menjelaskan bagaimana proses Black Elk menjadi seorang shaman. Hasil penelitian mengenai proses Black Elk menjadi seorang shaman adalah pemilihan sebagai seorang calon shaman, latihan dan disiplin untuk penguatan dan puncak dari proses tersebut menjadi seorang master shaman. Kemudian dari peran perjalanan spiritualnya dalam memoar tersebut, terdapat tiga peran perjalanan spiritual Black Elk untuk masyarakat Oglala, yaitu, sebagai pelestarian kepercayaan, sumber obat, dan pembangun pemahaman hubungan antara spirit dan alam bagi masyarakat Oglala.

This thesis aims at understanding the process of Black Elk's spiritual journey to be a shaman through a memoir. Native American's memoir is a media to show the Oglala's culture - values, beliefs, knowledge, skills, and practices. This thesis also helps the readers to understand about the roles of a spiritual journey for the Oglala tribe in the past, because the tribe is very close to the spirits and nature. The interdisciplinary approach which involves the culture, literature, socio-history, and pshychology theories are applied to strengthen the understanding of Native Americans, especially about the shamanic process for the Oglala tribe through a study on memoir. The cultural approach examines a spiritual journey by seeing the cultures of the Oglala tribe through a work of literature, a memoir. As memoirs are narratives, the narrative theory helps to connect some aspects for conveying Black Elk's identity and about the values of his tribe in a time structurally. The socio-history approach breaks down the conditon of the Oglala tribe to gain the depiction of the roles of spirits and nature within the tribe. As spirituality is appropiate with the pshychological approach, this approach sees the process of Black Elk to be a shaman. The results of the study shows the process of Black Elk's status, such as the selection to be a shaman, the training and discipline to strengthen the shaman, and the culmination of the quest to create a master shaman. Since this thesis also highlights the roles of spiritual journey for the Oglala tribe in the past based on Black Elk's memoir, it indicates that there are three roles of Black Elk's spiritual journey for his tribe. Black Elk's spiritual journey is for the preservation of the Oglala's belief, the source of medicine, and the ground for building an understanding of the spirits and the nature relation.
