Material komposit merupakan material yang terbentuk dari kombinasi antara dua atau lebih material pembentuknya melalui pencampuran yang tidak homogen, dimana sifat mekanik dari masing-masing material pembentuknya berbeda. Material komposit memiliki sifat mekanik yang lebih bagus dari pada logam, memiliki kekuatan bisa diatur yang tinggi (tailorability), memiliki kekuatan lelah (fatigue) yang baik, memiliki kekuatan jenis (strength/weight) dan kekakuan jenis (modulus Young/density) yang lebih tinggi daripada logam, tahan korosi, memiliki sifat isolator panas dan suara, serta dapat dijadikan sebagai penghambat listrik yang baik, dan dapat juga digunakan untuk menambal kerusakan akibat pembebanan dan korosi. Secara umum komposit terdiri dari dua komponen, yaitu berupa matriks serta penguat (reinforce). Matriks di sini berfungsi sebagai pengikat serta pelindung terhadap lingkungan dan juga untuk mendistribusikan beban ke dalam seluruh material penguat komposit. Sifat matriks yaitu ulet (ductile). Bahan penguat dalam komposit berperan untuk menahan beban yang diterima oleh material komposit. Sifat bahan penguat yaitu kaku dan tangguh.

In general, the composite consists of two components, namely in the form of a matrix and reinforcement. Matrix here serves as a binder and protective of the environment and also to distribute the load to the entire composite reinforcing materials. The character of matrix is ductile. Material reinforcement in the composite can act to resist the load received by the composite material. The character of the reinforcing material are rigid and tough.
