The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the dynamics and relations between globalization with the phenomena of religious radicalization in the case of Indonesia’s Jemaah Islamiyah, with a special focus on three members who were brothers: Amrozi, Mukhlas, and Ali Imron bin Nurhasyim. The concern for this topic arose when there appeared to be an increase in hate-crimes and a wave of misunderstandings towards Muslims all over the world, with a quicklybrewed notion that Islam is an inherently violent religion whose main tenet is destruction and harm; while if taken a closer look, there is a definitely strong connection between capitalistic globalization with the rise of religious radicalization. The main concern of this thesis is firstly, to further analyze and identify causal factors of how a group of persons under Jemaah Islamiyah came to the point of extreme radicalism with a violent end; and secondly to dissect how globalization plays a role in the process. Globalization in the direction of neo-liberal capitalism which exalts the values of free market, privatization, cost-effective principles, universalism, and a deep disregard to complex and intricate aspects of traditions and social justice, is seen as the main underlying cause to the process of radicalization. However, there are supportive causal factors that come into play. This thesis attempts to bring together an understanding of how Western hegemonic globalization plays a role in the radicalization process of Jemaah Islamiyah and its members, the Nurhasyim Brothers.
