Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) merupakan proangiogenik sitokin yang paling poten. Ekspresi VEGF-A dinilai menggunakan teknik imunohistokimia.
Background: Colorectal cancer is a malignancy included as the third most common cancer worldwide. Angiogenesis plays an important role in the development colorectal cancer. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) is the most potent proangiogenic cytokine. Multiple studies suggested that there was a significant correlation between VEGF-A expression with several aspects of clinicopathology. It is important to investigate the correlation between VEGF-A expression with clinicopathology profile of patient with colorectal cancer to enrich understanding about angiogenesis and carcinogenesis in Indonesia. Objective: To investigate the correlation between VEGF-A expression with clinicopathology profile of patient with colorectal cancer in Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta. Method: The study was cross sectionally designed and was a part of the ongoing study conducted in Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology of Internal Medicine Department, Dr. Sardjito General Hospital. This study included data from colorectal cancer patients who were diagnosed on January 2007 until July 2012 and their clinical and histopathological profile. Demography and clinicopahtological data were obtained from medical record and the corresponding paraffin-embedded tissues were collected from pathology archive. VEGF-A expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry. The correlation were statistically analyzed. Results: Among all parameters, there was a significant correlation between VEGF-A expression with male gender of the patient (p=0.003). Conclusion: In the local colorectal patients, there was a significant correlation between VEGF-A expression with male gender
