Delphic Oracle as Societal Force in Determining Oedipus' Fate in Sophocles' Oedipus the King

Skripsi ini membahas tentang Ramalan Delphi sebagai perwujudan kekuatan sosial di drama Yunani kuno, Oedipus the King. Peneliti menggunakan kritik sosiologi untuk mencari tahu hubungan antara Oedipus the King dan kehidupan social di Yunani kuno semasa hidup Sophocles, terutama pada Periode Klasik (480 sampai 323 S.M.). Selain itu peneliti juga meneliti fungsi Ramalan Delphi di dalam drama Oedipus the King terutama dengan hubungannya dengan kehidupan sosial pada masanya. Dengan kritik sosiologi, peneliti menemukan bahwa Ramalan Delphi adalah bagian dari ritual keagamaan Yunani kuno, bagian dari sistem dan situasi politik, dan bagian dari bujukan yang dituliskan ke dalam karya sastra pada masa itu. Di dalam drama Oedipus the King, Ramalan Delphi berfungsi sebagai cerminan sistem politik di Thebes, elemen yang membentuk karakter Oedipus, dan cerminan dari kehidupan keagamaan pada Periode Klasik (480 sampai 323 S.M.) dimana nilainya terletak pada manusia yang tidak bisa mengelak dari takdirnya.

This undergraduate thesis examines Delphic oracle as a form of societal force which determine Oedipus s fate in the play, Oedipus the King. The researcher is using sociological criticism to find out the relation between Oedipus the King and the background society of ancient Greece especially during Sophocles s life in Classical Period (c. 480 to 323 B.C.), as well as to figure the function of Delphic oracle in the play Oedipus the King based on the connection with society at the certain time. With sociological criticism, not only is Delphic oracle a part of ancient Greek s religious belief, it is also found that Delphic oracle can be seen in Classical Period s political situation, as well as a form of persuasion in ancient Greek s literature. In Oedipus the King, Delphic oracle functions as representation of political system in Thebes, an element which develops Oedipus s character, and a representation of ancient Greek s religion in Classical Period (c. 480 to 323 B.C.) in which the moral value is that not even the strongest and smartest man could over-smart the gods.
